Plan your day

We recommend staying at either Fretheim Hotel in Flåm or Hotel Aurlandsfjord in Aurland. Start your day with a tasty breakfast before boarding the bus that runs from Flåm via Aurland and Stegastein to the starting point of the hike. The walk up takes up 1–2 hours and gives you time to enjoy the stunning panorama of Aurlandsfjord. The bus will return from the starting point.

Tip! Both hotels offer Hiking packages that include lunch packages and an aprés-hike featuring local beer and cured meat.

About the hike

The trail is quite challenging and has some steep sections with sheer drops at times. Nevertheless, with a gain in elevation of approximately 500 metres, it’s only 3 kilometres long – so it can be a wonderful adventure for the whole family. The trail leads to a viewpoint 1363 metres above sea level, where you can marvel at the breathtaking views of the Aurlandsfjord. The round trip should take around 3 hours.

The season for hiking to Prest starts in May and lasts until October. However, this will depend on the snow conditions. In June you should be aware that there could still be patches of snow on the ground and if the snow is still melting the trail could be both wet and muddy. Whenever you hike, be mindful that the mountain weather can change very quickly, so you should be prepared for all kinds of conditions.
