Nærøyfjord

The narrow and spectacular Nærøyfjord is surrounded by steep mountains with snow covered peaks that soar up to 1800 meters above sea level. Waterfalls cascade down the mountains and picturesque villages dot the landscape. This is an area that is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is considered one of the most beautiful fjord landscapes in the world.

Njardarheim, Gudvangen

Viking village Njardarheimr

Visit the authentic Viking village of Njardarheimr where you can see how the Vikings lived 1,000 years ago, when Gudvangen got its name.

In the village you'll meet vikings. These are not actors in costumes, but "real" Vikings of all ages, who adopt the Viking Age as a lifestyle.

Here is some facts about the Vikings of Gudvangen:

  • On "Holmo" outside the Bakka strait there are viking graves.
  • In the Viking Age, the population in Gudvangen was more than 600 people. Today it is less than 100.
  • Gudvangen means "The Place of the Gods".
