A Hidden Gem in the Heart of a World Heritage Site
If you're planning or considering a trip to Western Norway, a hike to Breiskrednosi should definitely be on your list! In just one day, you can enjoy a fjord cruise on the majestic Nærøyfjord followed by a hike to Breiskrednosi, offering unparalleled views.
Below is a description of the hike to Breiskrednosi, which can be accessed via a fjord cruise to Dyrdal. You can also drive to Bakka, ascend the steep Rimstigen trail to Skarsvotni, and further up to the summit. Please note that the hike from both Dyrdal and Bakka is very challenging, following unmarked paths and, at times, no path.
The view from Breiskrednosi is every bit as spectacular as the famous Besseggen – but here, you can enjoy the landscape all to yourself!

Drop by Flåm Bakery
Just a 45-minute drive from Myrkdalen, you will find Flåm, a small fjord village at the end of Aurlandsfjorden, well-known for its majestic fjord landscape. Located next to the station, Flåm Bakery is a small artisan bakery with bakers who love their craft. They offer a selection of homemade sandwiches and other baked goods, perfect for a quick treat on the go.
Fjord Cruise in the World Heritage
The Nærøyfjord and its surrounding area are on UNESCO's World Heritage List for good reasons; untouched, raw, and beautiful nature with steep mountainsides, mighty waterfalls, small village communities and farmyards. The most relaxing way to take in the sights is on a fjord cruise aboard one of the award-winning vessels, Future and Vision of The Fjords. They glide silently through the fjord on electrical power, offering stunning views with 400 meters of exterior railing and a delicate Scandinavian interior, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows. Onboard, you can relax, soak in the scenery, and recharge your energy for your next mountain hike!
Dyrdal
The tour starts at the roadless village of Dyrdal, which in olden days had over 100 residents, a post office, an inn, and a hospital. First, you go through the distinctive clustered farmyard on the terrace above the sea. At the top of the farmyard, you pass the hospital, operational in the 19th century. Inspired by traditional herbal medicine, Jens Larsen Drægelid established the hospital, which was capable of treating up eight patients simultaneously.
The first six kilometers follow a gravel road alongside the Dyrdalselvi River, passing the Drægo farm, which is open during the summer and offers cultural-historical walks, accommodation, and food service. Near the Hjølmo mountain pastures, you will follow the path to Vassete and continue up the steep slope towards the summit. Once you reach the plateau where Breiskrednosi is located, the mountain may seem like a small knoll, but the view from the top is truly worth the effort.
Breiskrednosi
A razor-sharp cliff edge runs along the entire mountain with an impressive vertical drop down to the fjord far below.
The view of the Nærøyfjord and the surrounding landscape is one of the most breathtaking sights you can experience during your trip to Western Norway.
New Perspectives on the Return
On the return journey, you can either retrace the same route back down to Dyrdal or hike along the ridge over Rimstigsfjellet, descending the steep and well-known Rimstigen. On warm summer days, the fjord may tempt you to take a refreshing swim, before you relax on a fjord cruise back to Flåm.
