Turbulent history
The history of the Quality Hotel Grand Royal dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. The first part was designed by architect Harald Sund and was built in 1938. At the time, the Hotel Royal was Northern Norway’s most modern hotel with 90 beds and seating for 260 guests in the restaurants. As the war unfolded, the hotel was taken over by the Wehrmacht. This led to extensive damage to the hotel and surrounding area, which was bombed by the Allies.
After the war
Renovation and development of the hotel started right after the war. A neighbouring plot of land with the remains of the Grand Hotel Fønix, which was established in 1900 and burnt down in 1940, was purchased and work started. The new hotel, called the Grand Royal Hotel, was completed in 1951 and for a while was Norway’s largest hotel, offering 220 beds and 114 rooms.
Sweet Dreams stay
The Sweet Dreams project is a collaboration between Nordic Choice Hotels and UNICEF and helps children who are exposed to human trafficking get a good night's sleep. You can support the project by choosing not to have your room cleaned when you stay with us for more than one night. Just hang the Sweet Dreams sign on your door before 11:00. For each room we don’t clean, we will donate SEK 10 to UNICEF. This also helps us minimise the use of chemicals, electricity and water at our hotels. Together we can make a difference!
