Start the mountain hike with a chairlift

Just around the corner from Myrkdalen Hotel you'll find Myrkdalen Express, a chairlift that takes the whole family high up into the mountains in 5 minutes.

From the top at 860 meters above sea level, you can descend to Vetlebotn Mountain Lodge or the idyllic Mørkvesstølen. Along the way, there are amazing pools in the river where you can have a swim on warm summer days. For a longer hike, you can continue towards Svortetjødn from the mountain summer farms.

Nature trail to Vetlebotn Mountain Lodge

Nature trails are a fun way to make mountain hikes more engaging for children. Along the trail between Helgatun and Vetlebotn, the whole family can enjoy solving various challenges at different stations with a variety of questions. Maps and answer sheets are available at Myrkdalen Hotel, and, of course, the kids will receive a little prize once they've completed the tasks.

At the top of the trail, you'll reach Vetlebotn Mountain Lodge, perfect for a well-earned break for the little ones. Enjoy a cup of coffee, a cold ice cream or homemade pancakes, before heading back down.

Try family-friendly disc golf

One of the world's fastest-growing sports, disc golf has recently gained a lot of popularity in Norway. Each summer, Myrkdalen sets up a family-friendly 5-hole course where players aim to hit the baskets with their frisbee in as few throws as possible.

The course is free to use, and if you don't have your own frisbee, rentals are available at Myrkdalen Hotel.

Mountain hike at Vikafjellet with swimming and fishing

The high mountain terrain at Vikafjellet is only a 15-minute drive from Myrkdalen. This lush, green mountain landscape has a variety of paths suitable for families with children. The path along the four mountain lakes in Sendedalen is perfect for kids. With easy, slightly hilly terrain, you can decide how far you want to go, and swimming at the small natural beaches is a must.

The mountain lakes are also perfect for a family fishing trip. Just remember to purchase a fishing permit for the area, available at Myrkdalen Hotel.

Biking along the Rallarvegen road from Finse to Flåm

If you have older children, the historic Rallarvegen road is a route you should definitely consider. It was built by the workers who constructed the Bergen Railway at the end of the 19th century. You can cycle the stretch from the high mountain terrain at Finse to the fjord landscape in Flåm in one day. You can even switch the bike for the Flåm Zipline down to Kårdal for extra excitement.

Summit hike with spectacular views

The mountain peak Prest near Aurlandsfjorden is a true gem of a hike. The trail begins from the national tourist route over Aurlandsfjellet, approximately an hour's drive from Myrkdalen. A well-marked path leads from the designated car park up to the viewpoint at 1,363 metres above sea level.

You'll arrive at the viewpoint after around 2.5 km of hiking and a 500-metre elevation gain. From here, you're treated to stunning panoramic views over the Aurlandsfjord, stretching south towards Flåm and north towards the pointed Kamben peak, where the Aurlandsfjord meets the Nærøyfjord.

"You can bring children of all ages here. Take it at their pace and go as far as they're comfortable – the view over Aurlandsfjord is breathtaking even after just a few hundred metres."
