If you're planning a summer holiday in Myrkdalen, Norway, prepare to enjoy some of the country's best mountain and fjord experiences.

Myrkdalen Mountain Resort is located in the heart of Norway's fjord region, close to the stunning Sognefjord and the world-renowned Nærøyfjord. The resort is also near Voss, home to the extreme sports festival Ekstremsportveko. With lots of activities, it's the perfect destination for an action-packed holiday.

1. Family-friendly mountain biking

Around Myrkdalen Hotel, you'll find designated cycling trails for children and beginners and an 850 sqm pump track, the largest of its kind in the region. Near the ski bridge over rv. 13 towards Årmotslia, you'll find the popular jump lines of varying difficulty levels.

Three must-do experiences in Myrkdalen are mountain biking, summit hikes, and fjord tours.

If you want to explore mountain terrain from the saddle of a bike, the gravel roads on Vikafjellet are a great option. Myrkdalen Sport & Rental offers mountain and electric bikes for rent and are happy to provide you with tour tips.

Rallarvegen (the Navvy Road) from Finse to Flåm

How about starting the cycling holiday on the Rallarvegen, moving from the sparse mountain terrain at Finse to the lush landscape in Flåm? This historic road from Ustaoset to Flåm was built by the navvies who constructed the Bergen Railway at the end of the 19th century. Finish the trip at the historic Fretheim Hotel before new cycling adventures await in Myrkdalen, less than an hour away.

2. Mountain hiking from the top of the chairlift

The chairlift right next to Myrkdalen Hotel operates during the summer months of July and August. Within five minutes, you are transported to 850 meters above sea level. From the top of the chairlift, you have many options. If you bring little children along, we suggest following the road a couple of kilometers downhill to Vetlebotn Mountain Lodge. The lodge offers play facilities and outdoor activities, and serves ice cream, coffee, and homemade pancakes. From Vetlebotn, follow the nature trail to Helgatun and back to the hotel. It has varied fun tasks for the whole family and is accessible throughout summer.

If you're interested in hiking to a mountain peak, why not head to Finnbunuten at 1358 meters above sea level? This peak offers a fantastic view of famous glaciers such as Hardangerjøkulen, Jostedalsbreen, and Folgefonna. Another shorter option is heading to the idyllic Mørkvesstølen. Remember to take a refreshing dip in the small pools in the river!

In Myrkdalen, you can stay in an old barn surrounded by history and beautiful nature. Less than a kilometer from Myrkdalen Hotel, you'll find Tråfjosen, a barn where cows were gathered to be milked during the summer in the old days. The barn has been empty for over forty years, but now it is being used again – as a lodging for people.

Inside, the stalls for the cows are still intact, with fine stone slabs separating them. At the southern end, a module has been installed where three adults or two adults and two children can stay overnight. A window opens towards the view. It is transformed into a three-dimensional space resembling a piece of furniture. From the outside, this is the only thing indicating that the barn has changed into a unique lodging you may experience all year round.

4. Summer program

We have prepared an exciting six-week summer program with daily activities. The activities are suitable for all ages and are perfect for the whole family. From 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, you can participate in drawing, lego building, and other indoor activities at the hotel free of charge.

From 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, you can join paid activities such as a trip to the wilderness camp in Årmotslia, nostalgic games, and a guided tour to Vetlegrongen.

5. Family fishing with a guide

The line tugs and the anticipation rises – fishing with children is an experience, regardless of the outcome. Every day in July and August, the whole family can join in on trout fishing in freshwater - from a rowboat or in the high mountains. This is a family-friendly activity focusing on fishing and nature experiences.

6. Mountain hikes with fjord views

The World Heritage landscape between Myrkdalen and Flåm offers fantastic mountain hikes, thrilling sensations and spectacular views. Hiking up to Breiskrednosi, you'll have a formidable view, 1100 meters above sea level, of the Nærøyfjord towards Bakkanosi and Gudvangen.

This hike starts from Rimstigen, but please note that it is long and demanding and moves through unmarked terrain.

7. The best pizza in Western Norway

In Restaurant Tunet at Myrkdalen Hotel, hotel guests and visitors are served the best pizza available in the region. Our pizza is famous in Western Norway, so close your eyes and remind yourself that you are in a mountain resort in Norway, not a Piazza in Naples.

8. Experience Flåm and the Nærøyfjord

Just a 45-minute drive from Myrkdalen, you will find the small fjord village of Flåm at the inner end of the Aurlandsfjord, well-known for its majestic fjord landscape. Here, experiences queue up – enjoy pristine, raw, and beautiful nature on a fjord cruise, take Scandinavia's longest zipline from the top of the world-famous Flåm Railway, or be captivated by the panoramic views from Stegastein viewpoint.

At Restaurant Arven at Fretheim Hotel, you will be served traditional dishes with a modern twist made from local ingredients. For a quick snack between activities or a ready-to-go lunch to bring on your trip, drop by Flåm Bakery for homemade sandwiches and other sourdough baked goods.

9. Swimming Trip

Do you love refreshing dips in ponds, waterfalls, mountain lakes, and rivers? The swimming opportunities in the area around Myrkdalen are endless. We uncover the real gems for you so you can experience invigorating swims in mountain waters – perfect after a hike!

10. Visit the adventure hub Voss and the climbing park

Myrkdalen is located in the northern part of Voss municipality, just 30 minutes from Voss town centre. Many people are familiar with Voss, both in Norway and abroad, mainly due to the Extreme Sports Week – the largest festival of its kind in the world, held annually in June. Throughout the summer, you can experience the activities that the festival is based on - so go sky diving several thousand meters above the ground, fly like Superman in the wind tunnel, feel the forces of the river on a rafting trip, or balance from tree to tree in the climbing park.
