10 tips for winter activities without skis

Myrkdalen offers more than just skiing. Here are ten great winter activities to enjoy when your legs need a break, or the weather isn't perfect. Whether you're on vacation with friends or family, you'll find something that interests you.

1. Join a Snowshoe Hike to the Wilderness Camp
Join us for an idyllic snowshoe hike through the snow-covered landscape of Myrkdalen. We'll put on our snowshoes at Myrkdalsstovo and wander to the lavvo at the wilderness camp in Årmotslia. Here, we gather around the fire in the lavvo and enjoy warm drinks, snacks, and storytelling about Norwegian culture and traditions before we head back to Myrkdalen.

2. High-Speed Sledding in the Ski Resort
Every day throughout the ski season, the Ski School invites you to an exhilarating snowracer sled ride from the top of the Myrkdalsekspressen lift. You’ll take the last lift up, giving you the slope all to yourselves for the ride back down to the hotel. Along the way, warm drinks will be served.
Put on your winter boots, helmet, warm clothing, and preferably ski goggles, and join us for a thrilling sledding adventure!

3. Husky Sledding – the Most Exotic Winter Activity
Give your legs a break and let a team of energetic huskies handle the pulling. During the holiday weeks, Hardanger Husky visits and allows you and your family to try dog sledding on a 4 km long loop near Myrkdalen Camping.

4. Enjoy a Good Cup of Coffee in Kamben
The best coffee in the area can be found at Kamben Café and Bar. Here, you can also enjoy simple dishes, pastries, and a wide selection of beers from local breweries. We also show sports broadcasts on the TV screens.

5. Atmospheric Sleigh Ride
Can you imagine a more idyllic end to the day than being picked up by a horse and carriage right outside your door? Join Myrkdalen Horse Center for a sleigh ride during the Christmas or winter holiday. The tour starts outside Myrkdalen Hotel and takes about 20 minutes.

6. Fondue - More Than Just a Meal
Another perfect end to a day of skiing is enjoying a unique fondue meal at Nuten Fondue at Myrkdalen Hotel. It's more than just a meal; it's a social and fun experience with a slightly different table setting.

7. The Best of Fjords and Mountains
With one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys just a 45-minute drive away, why not take the opportunity? Take a break from skiing and enjoy a day trip to Flåm.The Flåm Railway runs several times daily throughout the winter. Perhaps you'll be tempted to hop off at Vatnahalsen Hotel for a few hours of fun in the snow, waffles, and hot cocoa?

8. Afternoon Tea at Myrkdalen Hotel
At the Nuten Restaurant in Myrkdalen Hotel, you can indulge in the quintessential British tradition dating back to the 19th century. Enjoy the charm of clinking vintage porcelain while savoring homemade scones, sandwiches, exquisite sweets, and, of course, plenty of tea!

9. Grilling and Campfire Fun in an Open Shelter
On weekends and every day during holidays throughout the winter season, we light up the fire pits in the open shelters. It's a cosy spot to gather and grill sausages and marshmallows. There are three shelters in the area – one by the square Torget, another by the forest trail near the children's area, and one further up the hill, just above the Myrkdalsekspressen lift.

10. Join BaseCamp at the Square
Every Saturday and Sunday throughout the ski season and every day during holiday weeks, the square Torget, located right in the centre of Myrkdalen Mountain Resort, offers organised winter activities for families. It's perfect for a little break from skiing.
