About Fjellstova Vetlebotn Café

At Vetlebotn Mountain Lodge, the rich history of mountain farming in Myrkdalen is honoured through displays on the walls. The cosy premises are perfect for family gatherings, groups of friends, or those looking to host private events and celebrations.

Summer mountain farming has played a vital role in Myrkdalen’s history. Since Vetlebotn Mountain Lodge is situated on what used to be a traditional mountain farm, we’ve paid tribute to this part of local agriculture. We’ve curated and displayed old photographs, giving you a glimpse into the farming life of the past.

Historically, these mountain pastures were the domain of women. During the summers, they moved up here as dairymaids to care for the livestock and process the milk.

Still, don’t imagine life on the mountain farm was all about the idyllic scenes of milking cows and churning butter.

After tending to the animals in the morning, the milkmaids would head down to the farm daily to help with haymaking and prepare meals for the men. Once back at the summer farm, it was time to round up the cows and handle the evening chores.

During summer, there was a traditional mountain farm gathering where everyone from the nearby farms would come together for a friendly celebration, enjoying homemade sour cream porridge. Naturally, sour cream porridge is still on the menu today.

In the autumn, when animals and people had returned home, the hulder folk moved into the mountain farm.
